Video by @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom Male chimpanzees are highly competitive and often fight for dominance, but in the savanna woodlands of southern Senegal, where we tracked one group of chimps for six weeks on assignment for @NatGeo, we found a secret waterhole recently filled with rain. In the brutal summer heat it provided precious relief and squabbles were suspended for a temporary truce. This amazing behavior had never been captured before and it shows that even male chimps can get along when they want to. Images and stories from this project are also featured in our new book “Into Africa,” which is based on the NatGeo exhibition by the same name. Follow me @FransLanting for more unique chimp footage and learn what it was like to work with chimps in the wild. @natgeo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #ape #chimp #wildlife #wildlifephotography #assignment #challenge #wild #waterhole #men #competition #cooperation #peace | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

Photo by @michaelclarkphoto // Checking the waves at sunset after an evening surfing session at Swami's near Encinitas, California. I shot this image quite a while ago but it definitely portrays an idealistic life of a surfer. When the waves are good you drop everything (within reason) and head for the beach. I learned to surf at Swami's and figured out it is a good thing I don't live in Encinitas as I wouldn't get much work done if I did live there. I could easily see myself growing my hair out to my waist and cruising around town in board shorts all winter. #swamis #encinitas #california | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night projectA majestic view of the Milky Way, as constellation Scorpius with bright orange star Antares, the Scorpion’s heart, rises above the Valley of the Moon, in the Atacama Desert of Chile. Planet Saturn is on the top left. On technical aspects for those interested in night photography. I prefer to shoot single exposure photos and panoramas, which is the case here. The main reason is the value of moment and historic credibility in a single raw file. I also like to challenge myself with old-school on-the-field techniques which I have done with film too, a joy that I can’t find in photoshop composites, exposure blends or HDRs, which is currently very common in night photography. My secret to achieve the same result in classic single-exposure photography is: using fast lens, excellent night sky conditions, star tracker at 1/2 speed, fine processing on raw files, and a full-frame camera with low noise performance. While I’m not able to answer your technical questions here I hope this helps. Video by @BertieGregory. The dramatic landscape deep in the heart of the unexplored Chiribiquete National Park. This massive area boasts one of the largest protected areas of jaguar habitat in the world. It is also home to ancient paintings of jaguars, representing some of the earliest evidence of humans in South America. I shot this from a drone whilst accompanying a team from Fundacion Herencia, an incredible group of people doing real 21st century exploration. It’s very humbling to know that there are still places on this planet we know almost nothing about. But despite its remoteness, it is still under threat. Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night projectThe morning twilight emerges as stars and the crescent moon rise above the tomb of Cyrus the Great in this time-exposure image. The 2500-year old World Heritage Site in southern Iran means beyond an ancient monument to many Iranians who celebrate today October 29th (7th of Aban in Persian calendar) as Cyrus Day. This unofficial holiday which brings thousands of people to the ancient site of Pasargadae is sensitive to the Islamic authorities in Iran who are concerned of growing interest in pre-Islamic values and traditions. October 29th commemorates the entrance of Cyrus into Babylon. He founded the Persian Empire known as Achaemenid, which later became the largest empire in human history. Cyrus is recognized for his achievements in politics, leadership, and freedom of religion which influenced both Eastern and Western civilizations. I often wonder how many of us will be remembered in 2500 years, for good. Photo by @renan_ozturk // Had my first experience in a flying contraption called a ultralight trike this past week covering ground from Moab, through Arches, Island of the Sky, Maze Districts of the Canyonlands, Bears Ears National Monument, Lake Powell and down all the way to Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii (Monument Valley). At first I was just gripped out of my mind sitting mid-air with nothing but a normal airplane seatbelt, 60mph wind whipping, knowing that if I dropped anything in the propeller 3ft behind me it was the end of us. Mostly though it was just the wonder of seeing a landscape in a new way, one I'm familiar with on the micro level of cracks and petroglyphs bt not in this “seen from space” perspective. What seemed so infinite - the endless desert towers and ridge lines, was now just a few interconnected miniatures carved in geologic sand and strafed with shadows of the earth’s morning light. Video by @BertieGregory. Turn sound on! My dive buddy and I had spent the best part of an hour trying to film a little fish called a lemon goby that lives in aptly named, stag-horn coral (pictured on the right). I wasn’t having much luck with these skittish little fish so sculled backwards to film my dive buddy in action. This was when a pair of bottlenose dolphins appeared out of the blue behind him. I had no way of telling my buddy there were dolphins just metres behind him as I had both hands on the camera trying to film this comical moment. I resorted to just shrieking into my regulator (the sound you can hear). Follow @BertieGregory to see the dolphins turn around to check us out! | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

Florida Wildlife Corridor
Photo by @CarltonWard // A male Florida panther triggers a camera trap in a South Florida cypress swamp. The Florida panther is the last puma living in the eastern United States. Recovering from as few as 30 individuals, there are nearly 200 today, primarily in South Florida. In order to recover from being endangered, there needs to be two additional populations of 200 or more panthers elsewhere in Florida or the Southeast. The good news is that the Florida Wildlife Corridor still connects the South Florida Everglades to the rest of the state and country. But we must invest in additional land conservation so that the Corridor is not lost to development. To see the previous frame, check out @carltonward and follow me as I follow the #pathofthepanther for the National Geographic Society. Gorillas can climb trees, but are usually found on the ground in communities of up to 30 individuals. These troops are organized according to fascinating social structures. Troops are led by one dominant, older adult male, often called a silverback because of the swath of silver hair that adorns his otherwise dark fur. A gorilla group is named after the Silverback leading the family. Each gorilla group has distinct and unique characteristic quiet different from another. The animals are peaceful, gentle, social, and mainly vegetarian creatures. Many conservation initiatives are meant to aid mountain gorillas, and it is believed that their numbers may be steady or slowly increasing. Still, they continue to face major threats from habitat loss and poaching.Follow @andrea_frazzetta to know more about my next projects #rwanda #gorilla #mountaingorillas | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

It is estimated that whilst they only occupy 1% of the ocean floor, they are home to more than 25% of the ocean's biodiversity! Coral reefs all around the world are in trouble but why should we care? They are constantly foraging on a diverse diet of vegetation, fish, carrion and other sources of nutrition until it is time to sleep for the winter. Even if it is October and -30c on the Fishing Branch River in Canada’s Yukon. Their key time to get fat is in the fall months when they target salmon. This forces these normally isolated nomads within close proximity to one another. Photo by @paleyphoto (Matthieu Paley) on assignment for @natgeotravel . Crossing India by train, 5 days, 5000 km, follow on @paleyphoto . I just sat there, escaping the heat and soon enough the slow stream of peddlers would start again, popping into my train compartment with all sorts of unusual offerings: chai, mangoes, a puff of air freshener, chain locks, books, chewing tobacco, powerbank and weird fuzzy fluorescent handbags. I ended up doing a series on it, trying to be at the same spot with my camera, elbows locked on the tiny table, back leaning hard against the window, shaken around. The new comer makes his way down the compartment shouting away what incredible deals he had on offer. I wait in impatience for the curtain to open and the theatre of life to unravel. That would usually start around 4.30 am. This “baba”came in with bead necklaces and bracelets on offer. Good thing can happen during "down time”. Photo by @amivitale. Samburu warriors stand on a ridge line overlooking the Mathews Range in Northern Kenya.  I'm Ami Vitale (@amivitale) and I've spent the past 8 years discovering and documenting the unique conservation efforts in northern Kenya that protect wildlife, people, and cultures alike.  Much needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife but very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the frontline and the incredible work they do to protect these animals. These communities hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. Grand Canyon National Park
Photo by @taylorglenn // A raft trip through the Grand Canyon is one of the most incredible travel adventures out there. At it’s deepest point the canyon rim is over a mile above the Colorado River. It stretches 277 miles with nearly 2 billion years of the Earth’s geological history exposed. The scale of this place is impossible to comprehend. A visit to Grand Canyon NP should be on everyone’s travel list. #grandcanyon #arizona #coloradoriver // Check out my feed @taylorglenn for more travel adventure around the globe. | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

Photo by @FransLanting “Meerkat Manor” A family of meerkats are sunning themselves at first light in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana, where it gets cold in winter. After they warm up, they’ll scamper across the desert searching for scorpions and other insects, but they’re always on the lookout for their enemies in the sky. They can spot eagles as specks in the distance and when they do, they’ll dive into the nearest burrow.
This image is featured in our new book “Into Africa”, which is based on our exhibition of the same name created for @NatoGeo and the Smithsonian. Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge
Photo by @CarltonWard // In a state best known for its beaches and amusement parks, Florida also has a statewide network of forests and nature preserves that host a tremendous diversity of wildlife. This Florida black bear triggered one of my camera traps in Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge near Naples. From the cypress swamps of South Florida to the longleaf pines of the of the western panhandle near Pensacola, Florida forests are home to seven populations of black bears. Ocala National Forest in Central Florida might be the best place to see a bear. As a wide ranging species, the bear show us that we need to protect wildlife corridors to keep its primary forest habitats connected to one another. Without corridors, development will isolate existing forests into islands cut off from one another to the detriment of bears and myriad other species. Please follow @CarltonWard to see more hidden wildlife as I follow the #pathofthepanther with the help of a storytelling grant from @NatGeo. #florida #bear @fl_wildcorridor #floridawild #keepflwild | © instagram.com/natgeotravel

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park
Photo by @babaktafreshi One of my favorite movies is the Forrest Gump. A great scene of the film is when Forrest (Tom Hanks) stops on a road after 3 years of running and briefly talks to his many followers who regarded him a prophet. This is the very scene but at night, an iconic view of Monument Valley in Utah-Arizona border earlier this week. A picturesque foreground of famous buttes, it has been the backdrop for many American western movies. The buttes are composed of hard rock left behind after water has eroded away the surrounding soft rock. In the sky of this single long exposure Antares and other stars in Scorpius trail down in twilight as the Earth rotates. Photo by @taylorglenn // Shadow and light dance across the majestic Grand Teton. Winter is just around the corner here in Wyoming. The mountains have already received several dustings signaling a long, cold season ahead. The contrast and textures of the newly fallen snow against the rocky terrain are so sublime. I am thrilled to be sharing images from my backyard here in #Wyoming and beyond. Follow @taylorglenn for more. #JacksonHole #winter | © instagram.com/natgeotravel
