Basque girls running home - Photograph by Bill Allard @williamalbertallard - Bill Allard is my long time friend and colleague at National Geographic Magazine, who is the most honored and decorated photographer at NGM still standing. The photograph below is one of his most iconic. Here’s what he has to say about the image now being offered in a flash sale till November 13 . “My picture of two small girls scampering home to the call of their mother in a tiny French village, is 50 years old this fall. To commemorate my 80th birthday and honor the anniversary of this picture, it is now available as a flash sale print for $100.00 for two weeks only starting November 1 through November 14, 2017. Made in the French Pyrenees mountains in 1967, it is a photograph that has stood the test of time and has been published in many magazines, books and photographic anthologies. This print is in private and museum collections and in large sizes sells for $3,000-$10,000. This flash sale print is a 6” x 9” image on a 9” x 11” paper. It is an archival ink jet print on archival watercolor paper. It is signed in graphite pencil on the front border and on the back. It is a perfect gift for a young aspiring photographer or for anyone who loves photography. At a price of only $100.00 it is a bargain not to pass up. All prints are shipped via USPS” @natgeo @natgeocreative | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto

Krishna's Butterball is a gigantic granite boulder resting on an incline in the historical town of Mahabalipuram in India. The boulder is approximately 6 meters high and 5 meters wide and weighs around 250 tons and is said to have been at this same place for 1200 years. In 1908, then-governor of the city Arthur Havelock made an attempt to use seven elephants to move the boulder from its position due to safety concerns, but with no success. I can’t figure out why the rock doesn’t roll down the steep incline by itself. Catch me if you can - the central Asian game of buzkashi is like polo but played with a sheep’s carcass. The object is to place the sheep into a hole on the far side of the field which can be more than a kilometer long and can involve 20 or more horseman, all trying to grab the carcass. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of rules, at least in the version played here by Tajiks at a wedding celebration in Taxkorgan. @thesilkroadjourney #buzkashi #mysilkroad2017 #taxkorgan #xinjiang #China @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative @natgeo.media @better_moments_photography @supchinanews | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto

A print from my show at the Dali International Photo Festival - Erhai Lake, the way things were in 1989 when I first visited. I was following the #Mekong River for @natgeo from source to mouth and spent a week here shooting as Erhai is a main feeder to the Mekong. Foreigners were not yet permitted to travel in Yunnan and no tourism existed. Fishermen and farmers from the Bai Minority inhabited small villages along its shores. You would be hard pressed to find many fishermen today as tourism has taken over as the major money earner as in so many other scenic bodies of water in China. The mild climate, clean air and pure waters have made Dali a huge tourist attraction. The exhibition closes on August 23. Please come. #dali #erhailake #yunnan #china @thephotosociety @natgeo.media @natgeo @natgeocreative @thesilkroadjourney @supchinanews | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto

Topaz War Relocation Center
A rare post of another photographer's photo, this one taken in 1942 by famed photojournalist, Dorothea Lange, displayed at the entrance to the Topaz museum in Delta, Utah. The caption reads: "Tagged like their luggage, the Mochida family waits for a bus to Tanforan assembly center" - a race track where they slept in the horses stalls. September 11, 1942 marked the opening of Topaz, a concentration camp hastily built by the US government in the Utah desert. It was one of 10 camps that held 120,000 West Coast Japanese Americans removed from their homes not because of anything they did but because of their race. 11,213 ended up here in Topaz, including my Mom, Dad, grand parents and relatives on both sides. My older brother and sisters were born here during the 4 years they were incarcerated behind the barbed wire and guard towers manned by armed soldiers. I just spent an emotional weekend touring the site with my family at the grand opening of the Topaz museum, dedicated to telling this little known story. #topazmuseum #utah #japaneseamerican #topazinternmentcamp @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto

Great Mosque of al-Nuri
The Great Mosque of al-Nuri, with it’s famous leaning minaret al-Hadba, was destroyed during the battle of Mosul on June 21, 2017. In a vandalistic move, Isis destroyed the mosque rather than let it go from their control. I took many photographs from the top of this minaret. Follow @thesilkroadjourney to see one such shot from this minaret that I will be posting later this week. #Mosul #Iraq #minaret #Mosque #alhadba @natgeo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto

View from my window: wood water tanks juxtaposed against the Empire State. Tanks provide gravity fed drinking and bathing water to buildings over 6 stories high. Though they may like like a relic from the past, wood tanks are actually preferred over steel for their insulating properties (cooler in summer, warmer in winter) as well as lower cost. There are some 15,000 working wood water towers in Manhattan alone. #manhattan #newyorkcity #empirestatebuilding #nyc @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @natgeo | © instagram.com/yamashitaphoto
